The objective of the visit was to apprise students knowledge about the hospital pharmacy operations including inventory management and drug distribution.
To gain insights about how medications are prescribed, dispensed, administered and monitored in hospital settings.
To learn about the ethical considerations in the pharmacy practice and importance of complying with them in a hospital setting.
- Activities conducted:
There were three main pharmacy departments in the hospital:
- Ground floor pharmacy (Outpatient pharmacy)
- Sixth Floor pharmacy (Inpatient pharmacy)
- Basement Pharmacy (Stores)
Ground floor pharmacy
The ground floor pharmacy served to outpatients, the department consisted of intotal 10 staff members. The manager helped us understand the functioning of the pharmacy. The tour started with enlightening the importance of certains things such as displaying the individual pharmacist license, Narcotic Drugs license, Schedule X drug license.
Further on we were explained how the drugs need to be arranged in a particular manner so as to being able for quick access. The medicines were organised according to their dosage form in designated drawers. Two refrigerators were present in the pharmacy setup: a deep freezer designed for medicines requiring low-temperature storage and a standard refrigerator for those necessitating cooler temperature storage. The look alike sound alike drugs (LASA) were kept separately. As well as the high risk drugs were stored separately. The dispensing of high risk medication was very stringest and a proper record was needed to be maintained for the drugs that were dispensed.
Sixth Floor Pharmacy:
The sixth floor pharmacy served for the inpatients. Mr. Pradeep Darekar played the role of introducing this particular department to the students. Herein we learned about the handling of the prescription. The importance of on time delivery which is very important for the patients who are in ICU. A proper record maintenance is important to ensure that the medicine that is dispensed from the pharmacy reaches the respective patient through the hospital staff.Prior to dispensing medications, pharmacists conducted thorough checks on essential details such as the brand name, manufacturing date, expiry date, and batch number. To enhance tracking capabilities, a comprehensive tracking sheet was diligently maintained. The medicines were kept more organized and handy such as the emergency medicines were kept on a separate rack, the surgical materials were kept separately for quick identification and acess.
Basement Pharmacy:
The basement pharmacy was the central store or pharmacy for the hospital. Ms. Vedika Savardekar provided us the overview of the functioning of the pharmacy. This department was responsible for fulfilling the demands of the pharmacy of the hospital. They were responsible for placing the orders for the required medications and procuring them from the best fit vendor. So basically they were responsible for maintaining the proper working of the pharmacies of the hospital by providing them with on time restocking of the required medications. We also got a chance of interacting with the clinical pharmacist of the hospital whose key role is reviewing records of patients to determine the appropriateness of medication therapy and evaluating patient’s condition to ensure all issues are being treated. We gained knowledge regarding the reporting of Adverse Drug Reaction and the procedure that needs to be followed.
The students also interacted with the Clinical Pharmacologist of the hospital, he shared an overview of how a clinical pharmacologist acts an mediator in administration of correct dose at correct time to the correct patient. He emphasized on the fundamentals of Adverse Drug Event Reporting.
